Official Marking System

In Academic Reading, conversion thresholds are stricter than General Training. To secure a Band 7.0, you must answer at least 30 out of 40 questions correctly.

  • Exact spelling is mandatory; incorrect spelling loses marks.
  • Grammatical accuracy must match required word completion forms.
  • No negative marks for incorrect answers.
CRITICAL WARNING: Unlike the Listening module, there is NO 10-minute transfer time at the end of the Reading test. All answers must be written directly on your answer sheet or entered on screen within the 60 minutes.

Essential Reading Strategies

Develop these core techniques to manage time and answer questions accurately under pressure.

📖

Skimming

Reading paragraph headings, opening sentences, and topic lines rapidly to grasp the passage structure and overall theme in 2–3 minutes.

🔍

Scanning

Moving your eyes quickly across lines to locate specific keywords, numbers, dates, proper nouns, or technical terminology without reading full sentences.

🔁

Keyword Synonyms

Identifying paraphrases. IELTS rarely repeats the exact question words in the text; locate matching ideas via parallel expressions and synonyms.

⏱️

17-20-23 Time Rule

Manage 60 minutes by spending ~17 mins on Passage 1, ~20 mins on Passage 2, and ~23 mins on the harder Passage 3.

All 11 IELTS Reading Question Types

Understanding each question format guarantees proper approach and strategy.

1
Multiple Choice

Select 1 option out of 4 (or multiple correct answers). Test of detail or overall comprehension.

2
True / False / Not Given

Verify factual details against the text. True = matches, False = contradicts, Not Given = missing info.

3
Yes / No / Not Given

Verify writer’s claims/opinions. Yes = agrees with writer, No = contradicts writer, Not Given = no statement.

4
Matching Headings

Choose the correct summary heading for each paragraph from a list. Tests paragraph gist.

5
Matching Information

Find which paragraph contains specific details, examples, reasons, or descriptions.

6
Sentence Completion

Fill in gaps in sentences using exact words taken directly from the passage within word limits.

7
Summary Completion

Complete a condensed text summary either with direct words from text or a box of given words.

8
Diagram Labelling

Label a technical, mechanical, or biological process diagram based on clear descriptions in text.

9
Short-Answer Questions

Answer factual questions with short phrases or exact text words within specified word limits.

10
Matching Features

Match statements, inventions, or research findings to a list of options (e.g., researchers, dates).

11
Matching Sentence Endings

Match the first half of a sentence with the correct logical ending from a given list of choices.

Practice Passages Breakdown

Academic Reading is split across 3 distinct passages of increasing complexity.

Passage 01

Factual & Descriptive

Easier Level 13 Questions
Focus & Content: Introduction to academic reading. Grounded in real-world factual information, history of inventions, or natural science topics.
Common Questions: True/False/Not Given, Table/Note Completion, Short Answers.
Target Time: Aim to finish within 15–17 minutes.
Passage 02

Analytical & Topic-Focused

Medium Difficulty 13 Questions
Focus & Content: Workplace or academic research-focused topic. Detailed analysis, theories, or behavioral studies with technical terminology.
Common Questions: Matching Headings, Matching Information, Summary Completion.
Target Time: Aim to finish within 18–20 minutes.
Passage 03

Discursive & Argumentative

Hardest Level 14 Questions
Focus & Content: Complex academic text featuring subtle opinions, arguments, counter-arguments, and dense vocabulary structure.
Common Questions: Yes/No/Not Given, Multiple Choice, Matching Sentence Endings.
Target Time: Allocate 22–25 minutes for deep comprehension.

Common Errors & Scoring Tips

Protect your band score by overcoming these frequent mistakes.

⚠️ 1. Confusing T/F/NG with Y/N/NG

Do not write TRUE instead of YES on a Yes/No/Not Given question. Examiners strictly penalize writing the wrong format.

⚠️ 2. Reading Word-for-Word

Trying to read and comprehend every single word will consume all 60 minutes before you reach Passage 3. Use scanning and key terms!

✔️ 3. Strict Word Limits

Always verify: “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER”. If the answer requires two words and you write three, it is marked wrong.

✔️ 4. Direct Answer Writing

Because there is no transfer time at the end, write your answers directly onto the official answer sheet as you finish each set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common candidate questions about IELTS Academic Reading.

No. Unlike the IELTS Listening module, there is NO extra transfer time in IELTS Reading. You must write or type all answers within the 60-minute limit.

True / False / Not Given deals with factual factual information in the text.
Yes / No / Not Given tests whether a statement matches or contradicts the writer’s personal opinion, claim, or attitude.

Yes! Writing in ALL CAPS is recommended on the paper answer sheet because it prevents ambiguity regarding proper noun capitalization.

Most question types (Multiple Choice, True/False/Not Given, Sentence Completion, Short Answers) follow strict passage order. However, Matching Headings, Matching Information, and Matching Features do NOT follow passage order.
