- Grammatical accuracy must match required word completion forms.
- No negative marks for incorrect answers.
Essential Reading Strategies
Develop these core techniques to manage time and answer questions accurately under pressure.
Skimming
Reading paragraph headings, opening sentences, and topic lines rapidly to grasp the passage structure and overall theme in 2–3 minutes.
Scanning
Moving your eyes quickly across lines to locate specific keywords, numbers, dates, proper nouns, or technical terminology without reading full sentences.
Keyword Synonyms
Identifying paraphrases. IELTS rarely repeats the exact question words in the text; locate matching ideas via parallel expressions and synonyms.
17-20-23 Time Rule
Manage 60 minutes by spending ~17 mins on Passage 1, ~20 mins on Passage 2, and ~23 mins on the harder Passage 3.
All 11 IELTS Reading Question Types
Understanding each question format guarantees proper approach and strategy.
Select 1 option out of 4 (or multiple correct answers). Test of detail or overall comprehension.
Verify factual details against the text. True = matches, False = contradicts, Not Given = missing info.
Verify writer’s claims/opinions. Yes = agrees with writer, No = contradicts writer, Not Given = no statement.
Choose the correct summary heading for each paragraph from a list. Tests paragraph gist.
Find which paragraph contains specific details, examples, reasons, or descriptions.
Fill in gaps in sentences using exact words taken directly from the passage within word limits.
Complete a condensed text summary either with direct words from text or a box of given words.
Label a technical, mechanical, or biological process diagram based on clear descriptions in text.
Answer factual questions with short phrases or exact text words within specified word limits.
Match statements, inventions, or research findings to a list of options (e.g., researchers, dates).

Discursive & Argumentative
Common Errors & Scoring Tips
Protect your band score by overcoming these frequent mistakes.
Do not write TRUE instead of YES on a Yes/No/Not Given question. Examiners strictly penalize writing the wrong format.
Trying to read and comprehend every single word will consume all 60 minutes before you reach Passage 3. Use scanning and key terms!
Always verify: “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER”. If the answer requires two words and you write three, it is marked wrong.
Because there is no transfer time at the end, write your answers directly onto the official answer sheet as you finish each set.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common candidate questions about IELTS Academic Reading.
No. Unlike the IELTS Listening module, there is NO extra transfer time in IELTS Reading. You must write or type all answers within the 60-minute limit.
True / False / Not Given deals with factual factual information in the text.
Yes / No / Not Given tests whether a statement matches or contradicts the writer’s personal opinion, claim, or attitude.
Yes! Writing in ALL CAPS is recommended on the paper answer sheet because it prevents ambiguity regarding proper noun capitalization.
Most question types (Multiple Choice, True/False/Not Given, Sentence Completion, Short Answers) follow strict passage order. However, Matching Headings, Matching Information, and Matching Features do NOT follow passage order.
